Carolyn will be donating 100% of what you pay to attend her class to Ourmala, the London based charity using yoga to help people forced to become refugees and asylum-seekers, including survivors of trafficking and modern day slavery and their babies. Ourmala provides a safe space to breathe with trauma-informed yoga, a welcoming community and other wrap-around services to help their clients rebuild their lives.
For over a year Carolyn, one of our Clerkenwellbeing yoga teachers, has worked with Ourmala, teaching yoga to refugees and prisoners of conscience.
One of Ourmala’s biggest projects is a mums and babies group called Happy Baby Project, which they run in partnership with another charity called the Helen Bamber Foundation. This group provides a safe space for refugee and asylum seeking mothers, both new and expectant, many of whom did not have a choice about their pregnancy. These women are some of the most marginalised, vulnerable members of our society, with many having experienced torture and sexual violence in conflict. And it is so easy for you to help them by attending Carolyn’s class or visiting www.ourmala.com.
“The North London Community has been hugely successful providing support to 115 mothers and 135 babies over the last year,” says Carolyn. “These women and their babies are struggling to live below the poverty line, most with no family here, no friends, and are so isolated and without the practical items you need as a new mum. The Happy Baby Community is like an extended family.”
While their babies are being looked after, the women can practise yoga, which is so helpful for their mental and physical health, and get other essential help.
“These women tell us that the yoga classes Ourmala offers as part of the Happy Baby Project help to relieve their pain and anxiety, whilst helping them sleep and restore self-esteem and hope. They also provide a much-needed sense of belonging in a safe community,” says Carolyn.
This year, over International Women’s Day and throughout March, Ourmala’s Warriors for Women campaign will see a movement of yoga fundraising events, dedicated to raising the necessary funds to enable them to reach more people.
