Carla joined Clerkenwellbeing (‘CWB’) in its infancy and is a familiar face for many, particularly regulars of her ever-popular classes. As she celebrates her fourth anniversary at 178 Goswell Road, we speak to her about the evolution of CWB, her plans for 2018 and what to expect from her classes, including her new Saturday classes for those looking to de-stress post the working week.
Carla, you have just celebrated four years at Clerkenwellbeing. Have you noticed any changes since you started teaching classes at 178 Goswell Rd?
“Gosh four years?! Time flies when you’re having fun! Over that time, Clerkenwellbeing has cultivated a welcoming, calming place of wellbeing that is open to all – a rare and special sanctuary to be found in the hubbub of London. I feel very humbled to be working and practicing Yoga with so many like-minded people; and privileged to be part of fostering an ever-growing, friendly and approachable yoga community for those in the local Clerkenwell area and beyond. It feels good to hear students describe Clerkenwellbeing as ‘their home away from home’ for yoga practice.”
You teach a number of classes at Clerkenwellbeing. For those unfamiliar with your classes, what can they expect from them?
“I’m passionate about sharing my Yoga practice with others, whether that be via strengthening, dynamic and energising Vinyasa (Yang) Yoga or nourishing, slow, floor-based, releasing and mindful Yin Yoga practice, or Yin Yang Yoga for those days when we’re looking for a little more balance and harmony in our lives (i.e. ‘best of both’ practices!). There is something for everyone.
“For me, Yoga isn’t all about who can get into the most ‘perfect pose’ or ‘forcing’ ourselves into shapes or positions, whether that be on or off the Yoga mat! Regular Yoga practice starts with peeling away the layers of toxins and blockages we all carry and store. These create stiffness as well as physical and mental tension, which ultimately ‘hold us back’.
“This ‘peeling away’ develops a better communication between our body, mind and soul – enabling us to make more appropriate choices about how we live our lives and relate to the world around us; whilst reconnecting us back to a ‘True Contentment’ and our ‘True Self’!
“My main reason for teaching yoga is enabling space for people to tune into, awaken and access their own full potential, allowing for transformation into the person they wish to be and truly are! My motto is: Stretch, breathe, transform.”
You recently ran a series of Saturday yoga workshops, how did these go?
“Ahhhh! (long releasing, relaxing sigh….!). I like to think of these ‘Yin Dulgent Saturdays’ workshops as a monthly M.O.T and perfect antidote to today’s busy and stress-fuelled London lives. They offer a wonderfully releasing, restoring and mindful 2.5 hour Yin Yoga practice, including Pranayama (breathing exercises) and guided Meditation.
“I’m very happy with how they went and feel very privileged to have been able to share this practice with others who resonated with it too. I am very grateful that both workshops prior to Christmas in particular were fully booked!
“Yin Yoga is definitely growing in popularity as more people become aware of its wonderfully therapeutic physical, mental, energetic and emotional benefits. These bring us back to a place of balance, harmony and wellbeing.
“I would definitely recommend everyone give it a try! It can be particularly helpful if you are looking to increase your flexibility, feel stressed, suffer from fatigue or depleted mental and physical energy, or are simply looking for some quiet space and ‘me’ time. It is good to give yourself permission to slow down!”
What can we expect from you during 2018? Do you have any plans for further workshops, for example?
“I’m very excited to have started new Saturday Vinyasa and Yin Yoga classes. These are currently proving to be popular with the Clerkenwell community and aim is to bring a new energy and feeling to Saturday mornings in order to set class participants up nicely for the weekend! For those interested in joining, a little tip: definitely book early to guarantee your mat as place at times are limited!”
“I’ll also be announcing some new Yin-Dulgent Workshop dates soon. These will include delicious new Yoga Nidra (Yogic Sleep), a powerful meditation practice for deep relaxation and healing. It’s said that 30 minutes of Yoga Nidra can be as restorative as three hours sleep, which is ideal for City living. So keep your eyes peeled – there’s more to come!”
Is there anything else we ought to know Carla?
“Well, I’d like to take this opportunity to say a BIG “Thank You” to all our dedicated Clerkenwellbeing Yoga practitioners as you make our community. I would also like to say a warm ‘welcome’ to those who are new. I look forward to seeing you all soon!”
