Julie Friedeberger has practised yoga since 1970. After completing her initial training with the British Wheel of Yoga she did five further years of training in the Satyananda tradition with her teacher, Swami Dharmananda Saraswati, founder and spiritual director of the Dharma Centre for Yoga and Healing. She began teaching in 1987, and in 1990 took early retirement from publishing to concentrate on teaching and writing.
She trained teachers between 1990 and 2000. In 1999 she started the yoga for cancer programme at the Yoga Therapy Centre, and has been offering yoga to those with cancer since then. She contributed to the Yoga Biomedical Trust’s Yoga Therapy training programme for ten years, and gives workshops and training days for the British Wheel of Yoga and other yoga organizations. In 2006 the BWY invited her to develop a training module on Yoga for People Living with Cancer, and she has delivered this course, which is open to qualified teachers from all traditions, throughout the UK.
Julie’s own experience of breast cancer 20 years ago left her with a deeper trust in the power of yoga to help us meet our challenges and heal our lives, and this has been at the heart of her teaching ever since. Yoga and healing are fundamentally the same: their shared goal is wholeness, the unity, harmony, and integration of body, mind, heart, and spirit. We all need healing, whether we are sick or well; and Julie believes that the simplest yogic practices are the most helpful in the healing process and the most powerful and effective of yoga’s “tools for transformation”.
Her classes focus on the breath, and include simple movement, some asana, breathing exercises, meditation, and Yoga Nidra (deep relaxation). They are open to those with health issues as well as to the fully fit and well, and are suitable for students who have some yoga experience and who wish to deepen their practice.
Julie is the author of The Healing Power of Yoga (2004), A Visible Wound: A Healing Journey through Breast Cancer (1996) and Office Yoga (1991).
