Yin Yoga
Wednesdays 18.15
A mindful practice, holding supported postures for a longer periods of time, targeting the deep connective tissue and fascia of the body. A truly nourishing practice and deeper release of physical and mental tension.
Monday 12.15-13.30
This class uses the postures of yoga as a way to explore into your body and reconnect with how it feels. Tim will guide you, gently, into the postures and you are encouraged to become aware of your body as it does so. He will aid you in observing how gravity interacts with your body; the way your spine lengthens and moves with the breath, and where tension is held with the possibility of softening and minimising the effort of movement. This awareness of the way you move can be as helpful on the mat as off. This class backs directly onto Tim’s Monday Meditation group and you are welcome to stay on but you will need to book for the Meditation separately via the website.
Tim is a trainee Yoga Teacher, studying with the LYTTG (London Yoga Teacher Training Group). This class is aimed more towards beginners, but all abilities are welcome. Please get in touch if you have any conditions that you feel Tim should be aware of before you attend your first class. Tim is also one of the team of Massage Therapists working at the Goswell Road Clinic.
Price: Suggested donation £5-7. Whilst Tim is training this class will be offered as a Karma class, where you pay (cash only) what you feel is appropriate. All monies collected will be donated to charity.
Mondays 19.15 – 20.45
Please contact Bridget direct to book: b.thornborrow@btinternet.com 07802 166 594
Bridget’s teaching is rooted in the tradition of Vanda Scaravelli which is centred around the relationship between gravity, breath and the spine. This tradition adapts the yoga asanas, or postures, to each individual physique in a grounded and hands-on exploration of the body’s natural movement patterns, working with gravity and the breath to release tension, free the spine and experience greater flexibility, strength and balance.
Tuesday 17.00 – 18.00
This class is about slowing down and non-doing. It allows the body to open and to free the breath through gentle and passive stretching in supine and seated poses. Various props are used to support the body throughout the class, supporting the poses for extended periods. It is open to all levels from beginners to experienced students. It is gentle and restful and helps to release and restore. In this way it complements more active yoga practices and our daily city life.
Pregnancy yoga is an amazing way to prepare the body and mind for birth. In this class you will work with breathing techniques to calm and focus the mind, whilst releasing the tensions and stress of everyday living. Breath work is linked to a range of specially tailored yoga sequences that will help tone, relax, strengthen and prepare the body for labour. This class is specifically designed to allow you to move, stretch and stay active in a supportive and safe environment for yourself and your baby. Relaxation is also an important part of the class, leaving your mind calm and focused.
Pregnancy Yoga classes are suitable from 12 weeks all the way up until your due date.
Hatha (Scaravelli) Yoga with Carolyn
Wednesdays 13.00
Carolyn has practiced yoga for many years and is a qualified British Wheel of Yoga teacher who trained with the London Yoga Teaching Training Group. Her classes aim to create an inclusive and safe but challenging environment where everyone is welcome and supported to learn at their own pace. She teaches Hatha yoga in the Scaravelli tradition with a focus on improving strength, balance and alignment by careful attention to the breath and gravity. Over time students learn to notice where they hold tension and how they can release it to find ease and freedom, especially in the spine. This is a great class for either beginners or more experienced yogis. It is slower and more thoughtful than many yoga styles making it ideal for those recovering from injuries.

Shadow Yoga
Shadow Yoga offers something quite different to anything else out there, whilst being firmly grounded in the authentic teaching of Hatha Yoga. It revives knowledge and practices that have been all but lost in our modern times, when this wisdom is more relevant than ever. And yet, it is well-adapted to the needs and limitations of modern city-dwelling people. It teaches us how to use physical activity, with correct breathing and mental attention, to remove the obstacles within ourselves (physical/mental/emotional), which otherwise prevent us from leading lives of contentment. These are the first steps towards gaining mastery over the body, mind and energy. This practice truly supports us in whatever life goals we are pursuing and in overcoming the hurdles along the way.
Classes: Generally taught as courses of 6 weeks/more for students to make gradual yet steady progress in this comprehensive system. If you are injured or pregnant, please let me know, as you may require a special class or individual instruction.
Beginners: 0-6 months yoga experience. Provides a foundation with the basic movements: joint warm up sequence, basic stances for strength and flexibility, and coordination with the breath to develop mental focus. The best place to start Shadow Yoga, even if you have previous yoga experience, as it is very different to what is commonly taught.
Level 1: 6 months to 1 year of yoga experience. Introduces the stances of the first prelude, Balakrama (Stepping into Strength). Can be suitable for those who have not done Shadow Yoga previously.
Level 2: 1-2 years experience of Shadow Yoga. Working with the Balakrama and the second prelude, Chaya Yoddha Sancalanam (Churning the Shadow Warrior)
Level 3: 3 years+ experience of Shadow Yoga. Working with the first two preludes, as well as the third, Kartikkeya Mandalam (Garland of Light)
Students work carefully work towards classical postures without strain or force, with adaptations to suit most people.
This longer class allows time for an introduction to simple breathing techniques and for a longer relaxation.
David has qualified with the LYTTG and has completed their 2 year BWY fully accredited Teacher training course. (LYTTG’s teachers offer a Scaravelli inspired approach) David is also an experienced psychotherapist.
